Bosch Parade 2019

Floating parade on the river Dommel, in the historical heart of 's-Hertogenbosch

  • Took place in June 2019
De Dommel

On the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of June 2019 the Bosch Parade sailed through the historical heart of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Bosch Parade is unique in the world as an art manifestation on water, using Jheronimus Bosch (1450-1516) as its inspiration. His world famous artworks are brimming with symbolism, fantasy and absurdity that continue to inspire contemporary creations. Bosch Parade collaborated with EELT to develop a new concept to invoke a more impactful experience for the audience. On behalf of EELT, Monique Zijp, Loes Reiling and Reg Gruson were part of the artistic team that gave form to this new version of Bosch Parade. Monique was directing, Loes composed the music and Reg made video-portraits of the artists.

Brabants Dagblad, a Dutch newspaper, called it ‘the best parade ever’ and mentioned a ‘record amount of visitors’.

'Ode aan de makers' (Ode to the makers) – Dutch documentary about Bosch Parade 2019

Bosch Parade 2019 honours its inspiration Jheronimus Bosch as a storyteller. His paintings are mysterious and idiosyncratic representations of his era. Jheronimus Bosch was also the first genre painter to give the common people a merited role in his paintings. In Bosch Parade 2019 that common people will reclaim its place.

You can conceptualise Bosch Parade 2019 as a visual story in fourteen tableaus. These form a universal fable about power and adversary, about conflict and connection, about chaos and hope. From the chaos after battle, a new order must blossom. Former opposites eventually form the basis for a new hope in this story that – like the works of Jheronimus Bosch – is riddled with symbolism and fantasy. This edition is a co-production with EELT Theatrecollective.

Bosch parade tries to use professional art to connect people and to inspire and surprise as Jheronimus Bosch did 500 years ago, and still does today. In doing so, we let visitors look at the world as ‘contemporary Jheronimuses’, and make the world a little more unique and social. Bosch Parade’s DNA is comprised of originality, craftsmanship and expressiveness.
